The word liquor or spirits generally refers to distilled beverages low in sugars and containing at least 35% alcohol by volume. Absinthe, brandy, cognac, gin, rum, sake, soju, tequila, vodka, whisky, are types of liquor. Distilled beverages with added flavorings and a relatively high sugar content such as Cointreau, Chartreuse, Grand Marnier, and American style schnapps are generally referred to as liqueurs.
